The Ministry of Education has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the implementation of the Tiwaphunzitse 2 Project, a three-year initiative aimed at improving inclusive early grade literacy for learners with disabilities in Malawi.
The commitment was made during a meeting held on the sidelines of the Africa Foundational Learning Exchange (FLEX) 2026, where a Creative Centre for Community Mobilisation (CRECCOM) delegation led by Executive Director Mrs. Alinafe Ireen Chibwana met senior officials from the Ministry of Education to provide an update on the forthcoming project.
The meeting brought together officials from the Directorate of Inclusive Education, School Health and Nutrition and the Directorate of Technical Education. Among those present were Mrs. Virginia Kachigunda, Director of Inclusive Education, School Health and Nutrition; Mrs. Lucy Magagula, Deputy Director of Inclusive Education; and Dr. Florida Banda, Director of Technical Education.
The discussions focused on the objectives of the CBM-supported Tiwaphunzitse 2 Project, which seeks to strengthen inclusive education by empowering teachers, guardians, school management structures and communities to better support learners with disabilities in acquiring foundational literacy skills.
Speaking after the meeting, CRECCOM Executive Director Mrs. Alinafe Ireen Chibwana said the engagement was an important step towards strengthening collaboration with government institutions responsible for inclusive education.
"Tiwaphunzitse 2 is designed to ensure that no child is left behind in accessing quality foundational learning. Achieving this requires strong collaboration with the Ministry of Education and other key stakeholders. We are encouraged by the Ministry's commitment to work with us in delivering meaningful and sustainable results for learners with disabilities", said Chibwana.
Mrs. Chibwana said government leadership and technical guidance would be critical in ensuring the project contributes to national priorities on inclusive education and improves learning outcomes in the targeted districts.
Director of Inclusive Education, School Health and Nutrition, Mrs. Virginia Kachigunda, welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that complements the Ministry's efforts to expand access to quality inclusive education.
"The ministry appreciates partners that align their interventions with national prioriries. We welcome the Tiwaphunzitse 2 Project and assure CRECCOM of our full support throughout its implementation. Together, we can create a learning environment where every child, including learners with disabilities, has the opportunity to succeeed", said Mrs Kachigunda.
Dr. Florida Banda also emphasized the importance of coordinated partnerships in strengthening inclusive education systems and ensuring children with disabilities receive the support they need to thrive in school.
The Tiwaphunzitse 2 Project, funded by CBM, will be implemented by CRECCOM from 2026 to 2029Â in four ducation zones in Mulanje and Zomba districts. The project aims to improve early grade literacy among learners with disabilities by building the capacity of teachers, guardians, School Management Committees, Primary Education Advisors and other education stakeholders while promoting stronger community participation and inclusive teaching practices.
The meeting concluded with both the Ministry of Education and CRECCOM reaffirming their commitment to working together to advance inclusive, equitable and quality education for all children in Malawi.
