Management of the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) visited Namadzi Primary School in Chiradzulu to experience how the Building Education Foundations through Innovation and Technology (BeFIT) programme is supporting learning through technology.

Chiradzulu Principal Education Officer Rabson Mtonga, on behalf of the Director of Education and Sports for Chiradzulu, led the site visit and briefed MBC management on the implementation of BeFIT. MBC Management later observed a Standard 4 learning session, where learners engaged with tablet-based lessons, and interacted with school and community representatives about their experiences with the programme.

BeFIT is a Government of Malawi-owned and led programme designed to strengthen foundational literacy and numeracy skills among learners in Standards 1 to 4 across all public primary schools. The programme provides supplementary, individualised and self-paced instruction through specialised applications installed on Android tablets. CRECCOM is supporting the implementation of the programme in Chiradzulu, Blantyre rural and urban, Mulanje, and Phalombe.

Following the session, MBC Director of News and Programmes Bester Nyangwa expressed appreciation for the programme and highlighted the national broadcaster’s responsibility to make such initiatives better understood by the public.

“What we have seen demonstrates how technology can complement classroom teaching and support learners to develop essential literacy and numeracy skills. As the national broadcaster, MBC has a responsibility to help Malawians understand how government programmes such as BeFIT are improving education. We will take a keen interest in documenting and sharing more stories from the programme through our platforms,” said Nyangwa.

In her concluding remarks, CRECCOM Executive Director Alinafe Ireen Chibwana emphasised the importance of television, radio and online platforms in building public awareness, encouraging community support and sharing lessons from BeFIT implementation.

“Television and radio remain powerful channels for reaching families and communities across Malawi, while online platforms allow information and programme experiences to be shared with wider audiences. Consistent media coverage can help parents, teachers and communities understand BeFIT, appreciate its benefits and support the effective use and protection of the technology,” said Chibwana.
