From a Struggling Learner to a Confident Young Mentor

Prior to the implementation of the Building Education Foundations through Innovation and Technology (BeFIT) program at Chimwamesi Primary School, Blessings Magaleta faced challenges in keeping pace with classroom lessons.

He struggled with understanding basic literacy and numeracy concepts, lacked confidence, and seldom engaged in class activities. His mother, Margaret Magaleta, often had to motivate him to complete his school assignments, yet he showed little enthusiasm for discussing his school learnings.

The Building Education Foundations Through Innovation and Technology (BEFIT) is an initiative led by the Government of Malawi, designed to enhance foundational literacy and numeracy skills among students in standards 1 to 4 across all public primary schools in Malawi. It offers supplemental, individualized, self-paced instruction through specialized applications on Android tablets.

Since joining the BeFIT program, Blessings has demonstrated significant improvement in both academic performance and self-assurance. The interactive, tablet-based lessons have enhanced his literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving abilities while making learning an enjoyable experience.

His teachers have noted that he now actively engages in lessons, responds to questions confidently, and achieves higher scores in classroom assessments.

The positive effects of BeFIT extend beyond the classroom. After school, Blessings eagerly shares his BeFIT learning experiences with his mother and other children at home.

He explains new concepts, demonstrates activities completed on the tablets, and encourages his siblings and friends to learn with him. This has fostered a culture of learning within the household, sparking interest in the lessons he shares.

The Head Teacher of Chimwamesi Primary School emphasized the transformation, stating:

"Blessings is a prime example of the impact of BeFIT. His confidence has grown significantly, his academic performance has improved, and he actively participates in classroom activities.

What is particularly encouraging is his continued learning beyond school by sharing the knowledge acquired through BeFIT with his family and other children at home. This demonstrates that the program is cultivating learners who excel academically and inspire others to learn."

Blessings' mother, Margaret Magaleta, has also observed the remarkable transformation.

"Before BeFIT, Blessings seldom discussed his school learnings and often struggled academically. Now, he eagerly shares his BeFIT experiences with us upon returning home.

He teaches me and the other children the lessons he has learned on the tablets, and we all enjoy listening to him. I have witnessed a significant improvement in his school performance and confidence, and I am grateful for the positive change BeFIT has brought to my son."
