At just 20 years old, Madalo Machemba, a Form 3 learner at Kasupe CDSS in Thyolo, has proven that determination and inspiration can open doors to independence. Like many girls in her community, Madalo often struggled to meet basic school needs. But her perspective changed after she joined the She Creates Change project, implemented by CRECCOM with support from Room to Read.

During one of the sessions, Madalo was particularly inspired by Trang’s story—a young girl who used creativity and resilience to start her own small business online. For Madalo, this was the spark she needed.

“I joined a Village Savings and Loans group, Chipereganyu, and was one of the first to receive a loan of K150,000,” she explains. “I used the money to buy shoes, and when I brought them to school, they sold out within a week. I made a good profit.”

With the earnings, Madalo has already bought herself a new school uniform, shoes, and is saving to pay her own fees when she reaches Form Four. Her small business has become more than just a source of income—it is a symbol of confidence, independence, and a brighter future.

Through the She Creates Change project, Madalo has not only discovered her potential but has also taken her first steps into entrepreneurship.
