District education leaders in Chiradzulu convened for a review meeting of the Building Education Foundations through Innovation and Technology (BeFIT) programme, reaffirming their collective commitment to strengthening foundational literacy and numeracy in the district.

BeFIT is a Government of Malawi initiative designed to improve foundational literacy and numeracy skills among learners in Standards 1 to 4 across all public primary schools in the country. The programme delivers supplemental, individualized and self-paced instruction through specialized applications installed on Android tablets, enabling learners to progress according to their ability levels.

In Chiradzulu, CRECCOM is supporting the implementation of BeFIT with a focus on strengthening leadership systems, institutionalisation, and community engagement to ensure that schools and communities fully accept, own, and sustain the intervention.

Speaking during the review meeting, the Director of Education and Sports (DES) for Chiradzulu, Anita Kaliu, expressed appreciation for the collaboration and the productive discussions held.

“I commend BeFIT Program Implementation Unit and CRECCOM for the commitment they have shown in improving education in the district. I particularly appreciate CRECCOM for deploying dedicated staff who are supporting implementation on the ground,” she said.

The Director of Planning and Development (DPD) for Chiradzulu, Smith Mnenula, emphasized the district council’s commitment to supporting education initiatives.

“The district is very committed to supporting education interventions. We have benefited greatly through BeFIT. The idea is to capitalize on the successes and define the way forward for the benefit of the Malawian child,” he said.

He further noted that the district will continue supporting BeFIT as long as there is proper planning and coordination.

He also appealed to the district to consider supporting financing for education sector monitoring interventions under BEFIT to strengthen accountability and impact tracking.

The review meeting provided a platform to reflect on achievements, address implementation gaps, and align on the next steps to ensure that every child in Chiradzulu acquires strong foundational literacy and numeracy skills.
