Chikumbutso Kamalizeni and Brenda Chidengu, a young couple from Chisomo Youth Club, have transformed their lives through the Green Jobs for Adolescent Youth (GJ4AY) project, funded by Save the Children Italy which connected them to SOS Vocational Training Centre for a two-month Informal Sector Skills Development Program (ISSDP).

Initially, they learned basic baking skills but struggled to compete in the market since many others were selling similar products, such as buns.

This upskilling opportunity allowed them to refine their baking techniques and expand their product range.

As a result, the couple introduced milk scones and bread—new and unique products in their community.

This innovation boosted their sales and improved their financial stability.

Today, they earn an average monthly profit of K45,000, allowing them to invest in additional baking equipment and support their household needs.

“We have been able to buy more equipment for our bakery, which has helped us grow our business,” said Brenda.

Reflecting on their journey, Chikumbutso shared how their financial situation has significantly improved.

Unlike before, when they struggled to cover essential expenses, they can now afford basic needs and even pay school fees for their child, something they once thought was impossible.

“I am now able to pay school fees for my child, and this will give her a bright future,” said Chikumbutso with pride.
