The Let Girls Learn II (LGL II) Project has conducted mother group trainings across all 36 impact Community Day Secondary Schools (CDSSs), with the aim of promoting positive attitudes and stronger support towards in-school girls and young mothers’ education.
During the trainings, mother group members were equipped with practical skills to conduct door-to-door campaigns for girl education, mobilize resources for vulnerable girls, and popularize both the readmission policy and Early Childhood Development (ECD) policies. These efforts are designed to ensure that more girls not only return to school but also remain supported throughout their education journey.
Lessons from the implementation of LGL I revealed that while many girls were successfully readmitted to school, retention remained a challenge due to limited financial, material, and psychosocial support. Previously, mother groups were supported with seed money to run small businesses to assist girls; however, the impact was constrained by rising inflation and inadequate income-generating activity (IGA) skills.
To strengthen sustainability, LGL II is now supporting mother groups with additional seed capital of MK330,000.00 each and training them in business planning and management. A total of 36 mother groups in Thyolo, Mulanje, Chitipa, and Ntchisi will benefit from this support, representing a total investment of MK11,880,000.00.
