Hon. Martha Chizuma

Trustee Chizuma has established expertise and experience in governance and Administrative Justice, and litigation and adjudicating on cases from 13 years of legal practice. Currently working as Ombudsman of the Republic of Malawi (December 2015 to date), Trustee Chizuma has previously worked as a Legal Counsel in profit making companies e.g. Limbe Leaf Tobacco Company Limited. She also worked as Deputy Chairperson of Industrial Relations Court-(IRC) – Industrial Relations court is established under the Labor Relations Act of Malawi to hear and determine all labor and employment cases in Malawi. She also worked as Assistant Registrar in the High court and Supreme Court of appeal 2003 — 2006 and a Senior Resident Magistrate. Trustee Chizuma advises a number of national Civil society organization boards, and though the youngest Ombudsman in the world, she is the African Regional Director of the International Ombudsman Institute.

Trustee Chizuma is currently pursuing a PhD in Development studies, University of Malawi and holds a Post Graduate Education from University of East London, UK; Master of Laws, International Law and World Economy; (LLM) with Merit and Bachelor of Laws with Honours {LLB) with University of Malawi. She is affiliated to : Malawi Bar (member), Women Lawyers Association of Malawi (member) and Women Judges Association of Malawi (founding member and ex-official). Trustee Chizuma has been instrumental to the development of CRECCOM Policies and is the legal counsel to CRECCOM Board. Some of her notable achievements include:

  1. Awarded a certificate in promotion of labor standards through corporate social responsibilities by International Training Centre- ILO, Turin Italy September 2008;
  2. Certificate in International labor standards for judges, lawyers and legal educators by the International Training Center-ILO, Turin Italy, August, 2009;
  3. Represented the Industrial Relations Court-(IRC) of Malawi at training in United Kingdom on handling of employment cases at the Employment Tribunal and the Employment Appeals Tribunal of England and Wales sponsored by DFID, 2009.
  4. Awarded a certificate in Contract drafting and Negotiation, by Katlego Consulting, South Africa, 2013.
  5. Certificate of Excellence in Leadership Development Programme for Managers (Universal Leaf), 2014.
