Growing up in a female-headed family and being the only male child, Daniel Kamwagha of Namwafi , Traditional Authority (TA) Mwaulambia in Chitipa district had plans of migrating to the neighboring country Tanzania right from his tender age.
Daniel’s father divorced his mother and left the 4 children (1 boy and 3 girls) under the care of the mother while Daniel was only 2 years old.
“I don’t know my father, he left while I was only 2 and never returned. It has always been hard for my mother to make ends meet. My mother is a local woman with no education and making a living through Agriculture. Growing up in such a family and in a community where the only opportunities in life are the businesses that men do across the border, I desired to support my family and business was the only way out” Narrated Daniel
“firstly, the trainers inspired me so much as they indicated that they were coming from Thyolo, a district far south, I wished I could visit Thyolo one day. Secondly, the curriculum under the youth forum especially the one to do with career readiness and goal setting made me replan my life forever. After training, I wrote down my vision and dream and pasted them on the wall in my room. Every time I looked at the vision, I was inspired to work extra hard. I worked so hard that I lost a lot of weight but in the end, it paid off.” shared DanielAfter sitting for his primary school examination, Daniel passed and was selected to Chinukha CDSS. While in form 3, CRECCOM through the IEQ-CDSS project arrived at the school with youth forum interventions. Daniel was selected by his classmates and teachers to be trained by CRECCOM as a youth leader. With his schoolmates (4 males and 4 females), Daniel joined students from Yamba CDSS at Yamba where they were engaged in a 2-day of intensive leadership training. According to Daniel, the training was a turning point in his life as he was exposed to another life that he had never imagined.
According to Daniel, what he learned from the training inspired and motivated him to change his mind from doing business along the border to studying medicine. In 2019 Daniel sat for his MSCE and passed with flying colors. Daniel got 13 points which were the lowest points ever obtained at the institution since its establishment. Daniel qualified for university space to continue his studies. During the selection of courses to be studied at the university, Daniel chooses immunology which is the study of the immune system being offered at Malawi University of Science and Technology – MUST in Thyolo.
“When I got the news that I have been offered space and government scholarship, I was so excited. Above all, I was excited that my life and that of my family was changing forever.’
In February 2021, Daniel traveled out of his district Chitipa for the first time.
“I will forever be grateful to CRECCOM for the information. Additionally, CRECCOM promoted English at our school which has helped me a lot in communicating with fellow students here at school. MUST has a diversity of cultures with students from across Africa, the only mode of communication here is English. With the background of English speaking from youth forums, I found it easier to settle down at MUST
Daniel dream of becoming medical personnel is slowly turning into reality.
