CRECCOM is implementing a project called Improving Education Quality in Community Day Secondary School (IEQ-CDSS). The project started in 2018 in the districts of Thyolo, Mulanje, Ntchisi, and Chitipa. In Ntchisi the project is being implemented in eight CDSS. In these CDSS the project established a committee called School Improvement Plan among others.
CRECCOM trained the SIP committee at Mpherere CDSS in 2019, during the training members of the SIP committee were equipped with knowledge and skills on how they can support the developmental activities of the school and also how to make sure that learners are passing well at the school. SIP committee is composed of members from different structures who are based at school like; Mother group, SMC/PTA, Teachers, Community Leaders, and learners themselves. Mpherere CDSS did not have any SIP committee since its establishment. When CRECCOM came the SIP committee was established. After the training action plan was developed to guide them on how they will be doing their activities as SIP committee. One of the activities in their plan which they developed was to motivate the best performing learners. “As one way of making sure that we improve education quality is to motivate best performing learners,” says Mr. Mkwezalamba SIP committee member.
SIP committee at Mpherere took 20 learners (15 Boys and 5 Girls) to an education visit at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA), where best-performing learners went to see and learn how the KIA does its operations and also SIP committee wanted to encourage girls to work hard after meeting/seeing a female pilot at the airport. SIP committee mobilized K260, 000.00 for this motivation trip. “I was encouraged by this trip to KIA because I saw a female young pilot who inspired me to work hard in my studies so that I can become one of the female pilots in Malawi. I was encouraged to work hard in English, Physics, Mathematics, and Geography to become a pilot” says Pemphero Kazima, 17 years old learner who is in Form three learner at Mpherere who went to the airport.
