Florence Gresham, aged 15 is one of the students at Ntambanyama Community Day Secondary School who have benefited from books distributed by Creative Centre for Community Mobilization (CRECCOM). The books which are for supplementary reading in secondary school, are in forms of novels, English literature and language, History, science, Geography and Mathematics.
Florence enjoys reading English literature book titled McBeth, which is one of the prescribed English literature books. Before then, Florence used to have difficulties in understanding McBeth, but with the coming the books in question in the middle of 2019, studying for her is now made possible and easier. Better World Trust donated the books to CRECCOM targeting the secondary school learners.
CRECCOM is implementing the project called Improving Educational Quality in Community Day Secondary Schools (IEQ-CDSS) since 2017. The project targets 36 Community Day Secondary Schools from four impact districts of Thyolo, Mulanje, Ntchisi and Chitipa. So CRECCOM distributed the Better World Trust donated books to its 36 impact schools. In Thyolo, one of the beneficiary schools is Ntambanyama CDSS located in Traditional Authority Khwethemule.
According to one of the teachers at the school, Vincent Muheke, the donated books have raised education morale of students and even teaching skills for teachers have improved. Muheke said, “English proficiency of many students at the school has been enhanced and the reading culture is also revamped. Teachers are also able to use the books for conducting study circles with the students as there are enough books to share.” IEQ-CDSS is co-funded by Mastercard Foundation and Echidna giving. The project, which started in 2017 is expected to end at the end of 2020
