Students at Chikonde Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) are all smiles after getting shoes from Creative Centre for Community Mobilization (CRECCOM) and Bata Malawi.
The Mulanje-based CDSS is one of the schools that benefitted from the initiative, aimed at keeping the girl child in school.
Sixteen-year-old Rose Kaunde is in Form Two and could not hide her excitement.
“The donation will motivate me to work hard in school,” she said.
The school’s deputy head teacher Ruthness Kabango said most girls fail to continue with their education due to poverty, among others.
She said: “Besides, girls don’t get encouragement from their parents to work hard in school.
“To make matters worse, society regards them as marriage materials. Therefore, the shoes will motivate them to continue with their education.”
CRECCOM donated the shoes in conjunction with Bata Malawi through its Improving Education Quality in Community Day Secondary School (IEQ-CDSS) project with funding from the Mastercard Foundation and Echidna Giving.
CRECCOM is implementing the project in 36 CDSSs in Chitipa, Ntchisi, Mulanje and Thyolo districts
